Emotions are lurking in the way we eat, and around what we eat.
An emotion can be described as something we experience throughout the day in response to a number of given stimuli. We are not always consciously aware of our emotions, as many of these feelings can lurk in the sub conscious mind. Emotions are very complicated and can be difficult to describe, as the experiences of emotions are in many parts subjective to the individual.
If we ate only for fuel, then people wouldn’t struggle with maintaining a healthy weight. Obesity and anorexia statistics show the trend is growing.
Our relationship with food is one of the most emotionally fuelled activities we do. It’s further complicated by the fact that some food types increases our sense of well being, such as chocolate and ice cream.
From the moment we are born, food is given to provide comfort and soothing. A reverse effect could materialise from the absence of available food in our environment whilst growing up. As toddlers, we are frequently rewarded with food for good behaviour and treats are withdrawn for bad behaviour. Celebrations are highly charged occasions which encourage excessive eating. Comfort eating, or the opposite can take place following a highly charged relationship break up.
It’s interesting that we talk about being “good” in times when eat restrictively which alters our belief system to think we are being good when we starve ourselves.
These emotions affect those who overeat, as well as those who don’t eat enough. This crazy relationship with food sabotages our attempts to eat healthily and normally for our body weight.
Hypnotherapy can be an excellent way of uncovering some of the emotional routes of any eating disorders. Any competent Hypnotherapist will have a whole range of techniques and tools that they can use to help their clients resolve their eating problems. These include EFT for cravings, EMI for any painful associated memories, as well as NLP and of course hypnosis.
I work with clients who want to lose weight using a whole range of techniques, and work on the emotional aspects of the relationship with food in the first instance. Once you change the belief, you remove an important chink of the chain that represents the old problem. This clears the way for further work, such as the Gastric Band Hypnosis for those clients who have a considerable amount of weight to lose.
